Paradis Europa is an imagined destination, somewhere between a promise and a place. Bringing together photographs made by Shane Lynam across Europe between 2010 and 2020, the project constructs a geography that is at once familiar and imagined.

The photographs reflect Lynam’s long-standing interest in the cultural and physical landscapes of contemporary Europe, particularly the ways in which human intervention produces unexpected visual relationships, often with a theatrical quality.

Having spent significant periods of his life living in different parts of Europe, Lynam’s relationship with the continent is both deeply personal and difficult to define. Paradis Europa is, in part, an attempt to give visual form to an elusive sense of possibility, a promise that seems ever-present but remains difficult to grasp.

Guided by this feeling, Lynam returns to his archive, bringing together photographs made across different cultural and social settings. Viewed from the present, the images are reconsidered beyond their original narratives, allowing new associations to emerge and giving shape to something that can be felt but not necessarily articulated.
